Founded in 1999, the College of Foreign Languages (hereafter referred to as the college) began as the Teaching and Researching Office of the Basic Teaching Department in 1983. In 1985, it became the Department of Foreign Languages.
The college has a strong and well organized teaching and research team with a core team comprised of instructors with overseas educational backgrounds. There are 116 staff members working for the college, among who are 11 professors, 36 associate professors, 54 lecturers and 32 postgraduate supervisors. They work together with 8 regular foreign teachers and 2 renowned scholars from abroad as guest professors. Currently there are 673 undergraduates and 129 postgraduates studying in the college.
The college offers 3 language majors including English, Japanese and Russian. The college also offers courses for non-English major students for the entire university. Currently, there is 1 First Level Discipline postgraduate program for Foreign Languages and Literature. There are 3 Second Level postgraduate programs for English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, and Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics, as well as Degree Granting Authority for a Master’s in Translation and Interpretation. The college has made great achievements in education and academic research, jointly undertaking 144 different research programs such as projects from the National Philosophy and Social Sciences, projects from the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, Projects funded by the Special Fund for Higher Education Institutes for Basic Research from the Central Government and Provincial Level Humanity and Social Science Projects. The college has also published 39 textbooks and monographs and more than 400 academic papers.
The college enjoys rich educational resources, such as the College Library which keeps more than 9,000 books and periodicals in foreign languages and more than 180 kinds of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages in addition to a large audio - video archive. The Language Laboratory Center is equipped with 27 spontaneous interpretation rooms, online study rooms and multi-media classrooms which include 1,620 seats, accounting for more than 2,000 m2. In addition, the satellite signal receiving device offers programs in foreign languages for the teachers and students.
The college is very active and cooperative in its international exchanges and has established cooperative relationships with higher level schools and research institutes in the U.S., the U.K., Japan and Russia. A history of more than 20 years has enabled the college to cultivate a rich culture and spirit of unity, endurance, enterprise and dedication. The college will continue to push forward in its exchanges and cooperation with educational institutions both domestically and abroad to comprehensively build an open and international college and to place it among the top teaching and research colleges from universities within Heilongjiang Province and nationwide.
